Congratulations to the Chaldean people for Akitu, the Babylonian New Year
Patriarch Louis Raphael Sako
On the occasion of the advent of the Babylonian New Year “Akitu” on 1/4/2018, which coincides with the celebration of the glorious Easter holiday, I want to take the opportunity to give the Chaldean and Assyrian people my congratulations and blessings and I wish that these two events will lead to a strengthening of their faith in the life of Christ and in their culture and heritage as well in their unity.
My wish is that these two occasions will motivate all our people, wherever they are, to prove their faith in the faith of the early apostles, in the civilizations of their great forefathers, and to carry out good and courageous initiatives in the areas that serve life, love and unity.
Perhaps the time has come for the Chaldeans to think together with the other Syriac, Assyrian and Armenian Christians to launch a single political organization that brings together their diversity and differences of opinion and work with their citizens for peace and stability, building a state of institutions and ensuring a free and dignified life for the Iraqis.
I think that the upcoming elections are an opportunity to change the current policies and administrative procedures that are not compatible with the new reality, so I urge everyone to go to the polls and vote for the best.
Here I must pay tribute to the autonomy of the Chaldean Alliance and its program to achieve the state’s citizenship and full citizenship in a national and humanitarian spirit. Chaldeans were and will remain part of the social and historical fabric of Iraq and the greatest part of the Christian Church.
In this atmosphere of joy and brotherhood, we call on the Chaldeans to stop the destructive criticisms and crystallize their thinking in the framework of the Federation’s efforts and launch a public project under the slogan “Wake up, Chaldean” in order to preserve their national identity and language and purify them of all the impurities. Revival of their cultural heritage, folklore in their forms and development so as not to be lost. Here I stress the need to adopt the written, audio and visual media for dissemination and awareness. Our cultural and Christian heritage is very rich, and we should realize that without a community here on earth, this legacy will be like a broken tree.
In this respect, I would like to mention that many of our Muslim citizens have told us publicly: You are the people of Iraq. This feeling is encouraging to build solid relationships to ensure a bright future with everyone.
Project: “Awaken Chaldean” aims to build the Chaldean house and strengthen it against extremism and intolerance, and to be drawn to the national interest in the religious aspect, in order to strengthen the Christian house and open the horizon of unity, on the various fundamental participants, between them and the Assyrians, Syriac and Armenians brothers. This unity does not seem close under the current reality. The reason for this is that we do not have open and serious interlocutors, preferring agendas and narrow interests. However, it must be pursued with all our strength, and we should remain in a state of positive readiness to build towards it. It is the strength that guarantees our survival and our continuity.
The blessing of resurrection and of the Babylonian New Year to our people
