The Chaldean Patriarchate Condemns the Destruction of Mar Elyia’s Monastery by ISIS and Appeals the Allied Forces has to Protect the Christian and Islamic Heritage in Mosul

The Chaldean Patriarchate was saddened and distressed to hear that ISIS has destroyed Mar Elyia’s (St. Elijah) monastery, which represents one of the ancient and historic landmarks in Mosul. As we condemn this destructive work that erases Mosul memory, we are asking the allied forces to preserve and protect such precious heritage and other similar Christian and Islamic locations.
As you may know and before the Arab Muslim came to Mosul, it was an Eastern Christian city with many Churches and Monasteries even distributed to the surrounding districts that belongs to the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th Centuries. The city contains also mosques with religious, artistic and architectural value.
The Monastery of St. Elyia, known as the “Al-Dair Al-Said” owned by the Chaldean Church, was established in 640 by a monk from Al-Hirta Emirate (which is today Kufa and Najaf) south of Mosul. It was built of stone and lime and has been renovated many times due to the influence of environmental factors. However, the monastery was ultimately abandoned because of its’ location, away from the city.
Christian from Mosul used to celebrate St. Elyia’s feast annually on the first Friday of the Church Consecration Season until 2004 due to security uncertainties.
